Nolan Arenado hit his third grand slam of the season to cap a five-run fifth and the Arizona Diamondbacks kept their slim National League wild card chances alive with an 8-4 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday in Phoenix.
Geraldo Perdomo had two hits and two RBIs and five Arizona relievers limited the Yankees to three hits in 6 1-3 scoreless innings as the D-backs scored the final seven runs for their major league-leading 47th comeback win.
Heliot Ramos, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones homered for the Yankees, who fell six games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East. The Yankees lead the American League with 216 homers. Lombard had two hits.
Lars Nootbaar and Gabriel Moreno had two hits and scored twice and Ketel Marte had two hits for the Diamondbacks, who have won two straight games.
The D-backs (82-74) remained five games behind NL wild-card leaders Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres (both 87-69) and four behind the Philadelphia Phillies (86-70) with six to play.
The D-backs would lose a tiebreaker to the Cubs, and tiebreakers against the Padres and Phillies have yet to be determined. The D-backs end the season with three games at Colorado and the final three at San Diego.
Justin Martinez (3-0), the second Arizona reliever to follow Corbin Burnes, struck out two in the fifth for the victory.
The Yankees lost their second straight after winning four of five.
Nootbaar started the D-backs’ five-run fifth with a one-out double off Yankees starter Will Warren. Marte singled and Moreno walked to load the bases. Brent Headrick (7-4) entered and struck out Perdomo before walking Corbin Carroll to force in a run.
Arenado followed with his 381-foot homer into the Arizona bullpen for a 6-4 edge. He has five homers in his last 10 games and is tied with Houston’s Yordan Alvarez for the major league lead in grand slams.
Perdomo tripled in a run and scored on Carroll’s single in a two-run seventh.
The D-backs took a 1-0 lead in the first on singles by Nootbaar, Marte and Perdomo. Warren gave up six hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts.
Ramos, Lombard and Jones homered four batters apart in a four-run third off Burnes for a 4-1 lead. Ramos homered with two outs before Luis Garcia Jr. singled and Lombard and Jones hit back-to-back shots. Lombard’s went an estimated 424 feet. Jones’ went 448.
Burnes gave up four runs and five hits, with two walks and two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. He has given up nine runs and five homers in 10 1-3 innings of three starts since returning after a 15-month absence after Tommy John surgery.
