Matty Beniers scored on a breakaway 55 seconds into overtime as the Seattle Kraken defeated the visiting Calgary Flames 2-1 on Wednesday.
Berkly Catton also tallied for the Kraken, who were playing for the first time since a 6-2 loss in Calgary on Friday. Seattle goaltender Joey Daccord made 25 saves.
Yegor Sharangovich scored for the Flames, who are 7-3-1 since an 0-5-0 start. Dustin Wolf stopped 27 of 29 shots in Calgary’s first overtime game of the season.
The winning goal came after Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour stole a pass between the top of the faceoff circles in his own end of the rink and shoveled it ahead to Beniers, who tracked it down just before reaching the far blue line. Beniers skated in alone and put a low shot off the right post and into the net.
The Flames opened the scoring at 12:45 of the first period. They worked the puck down to Morgan Frost behind the net, and he sent a pass back to Zach Whitecloud for a one-timer from the right point. Sharangovich slightly deflected the puck from the mid-slot, putting it between the legs of a screened Daccord.
The Kraken appeared to tie the score two minutes later when Catton held off a defender and put a one-handed shot past Wolf, but Flames coach Ryan Huska challenged the play, and a video review determined Catton was slightly offside.
Catton officially tied it at 13:09 of the second. Catton tallied on a wrist shot from just inside the right faceoff dot on a 3-on-2 rush after taking a backhand pass from Mackie Samoskevich. Catton extended his point streak to seven games (three goals, five assists).
Forward Matthew Wood made his Kraken debut after being acquired Sunday from Nashville in exchange for forward Shane Wright. Wood played left wing on the second line with Frederick Gaudreau and Chandler Stephenson.
Wood nearly gave Seattle the lead with about 13:30 remaining as he drove to the net and lifted a shot over Wolf’s shoulder, but the puck rang off the crossbar.
