The St. Louis Blues and visiting Winnipeg Jets will both look to get back in the win column when they meet Tuesday night.
Both have lost two straight and the Jets have dropped three of their last four.
Winnipeg lost a 3-2 decision to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
What made the defeat sting even more was that former Jet Nikolaj Ehlers scored the winning goal, breaking a 2-2 tie on the power play 6:43 into the third period. He helped the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup last season in his first campaign in Carolina after leaving the Jets, where he began his career and played 10 seasons, as a free agent.
Mark Scheifele and Alex Iafallo scored for Winnipeg and Clay Stevenson made 34 saves.
“When we do things the right way, we had them on their heels and we just have to find the way to get those 60-minute games in there,” Jets coach Scott Arniel said.
It was Scheifele’s 374th career goal, five short of the all-time Winnipeg Jets’ record.
Scheifele already holds the career-goals standard for the current Winnipeg Jets franchise, which was originally the Atlanta Thrashers and moved and changed names for the 2011-12 season.
Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk holds the record with 379 for the original franchise, one of four teams that came to the NHL from the World Hockey Association for the 1979-80 season, and it moved to become the Phoenix Coyotes after the 1995-96 campaign.
Kyle Connor and Cole Perfetti were held off the scoresheet Saturday. The pair have been the Jets’ biggest offensive weapons in the early going. Connor has eight goals and 11 points and Perfetti five goals and eight points in eight games.
Scheifele has two goals and six assists for eight points and is on a five-game point streak, which has produced all of his points.
Stuart Skinner is 3-0-2 in five games with a 2.76 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.
Winnipeg placed defenseman Josh Morrissey (upper body) on IR and recalled Brayden Yager from AHL Manitoba on Monday.
It’s the beginning of a five-game home stand for the Blues, who lost at the hands of the host Nashville Predators 5-2 on Saturday.
“Our execution level just needs to be better because we were in that game and the puck wasn’t going in. It turned on us quick,” said Jimmy Snuggerud, who had a power-play goal.
Defenseman Philip Broberg also scored and Jordan Binnington made 19 saves.
It was defenseman Brandon Carlo’s 700th career game.
St. Louis placed Ross Johnston (lower body), who sat out Saturday’s game, on IR with a lower-body injury and recalled Otto Stenberg from AHL Springfield on Monday after calling up Aleksanteri Kaskimaki after the game Saturday.
Mason McTavish leads the team in goals (five) and points (nine) in eight games and is on a six-game point streak (four goals, four assists). Pius Suter (three goals, three assists), Connor McMichael (two goals, four assists) and Dylan Holloway (a goal and five assists) all have six points.
After a slow start, first-year captain Robert Thomas (one goal, three assists) has points in three of his last four games.
Joel Hofer has played in five of the eight games with a 2-2-1 record, 2.43 GAA and .906 save percentage.
