Mitch Marner scored a 4-on-3 power-play goal at the 2:40 mark of overtime to give the Vegas Golden Knights a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night in Las Vegas.
With Scott Laughton in the penalty box for tripping Shea Theodore six seconds earlier, Marner snapped a wrist shot from the high slot past a Mark Stone screen and beyond the glove of Kings goaltender Darcy Kuemper for the game-winner and his second goal of the season. It was Marner’s eighth career overtime winner and his first with the Golden Knights.
Trevor Connelly scored a goal and also assisted on the game-winner and Stone had two assists for Vegas, which extended its winning streak to four games.
Carter Hart made 26 saves for the Golden Knights, who leapfrogged the Edmonton Oilers and moved back into first place in the Pacific Division.
Artemi Panarin scored a goal for Los Angeles, which remains winless (0-2-2) under first-year head coach Peter Laviolette. It also marks the first time in franchise history that the Kings have begun a season with four consecutive losses.
Kuemper, who led the league with 15 losses in games beyond regulation last season, finished with 30 saves.
Following a scoreless opening period, the two teams exchanged goals in the second period, which ended up tied 1-1 despite the fact Vegas finished with a commanding 14-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead at the 2:37 mark on a power-play goal by Connelly, who one-timed a cross-crease pass from Stone inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
Los Angeles answered with a power-play goal by Panarin, who fired a shot from above the circles past a leaping screen by Alex Laferriere that caromed off the left post and in for his third goal.
The Kings, who set an NHL record last season with 33 games of their 82 regular-season games reaching overtime, fell to 0-2 in that category this season.
