Xander Bogaerts slugged a two-run homer and Fernando Tatis Jr. added a solo shot as the visiting San Diego Padres beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-5 on Friday for their sixth straight win.
Luis Campusano doubled twice and drove in three runs for San Diego, which has won 16 of its last 20 games to move into the second wild-card spot in the National League. Jake Cronenworth, Manny Machado and Ty France each had two hits.
Michael King (8-8) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts over six innings.
Yuki Matsui pitched a scoreless seventh inning before Cleveland pushed a run across in the eighth when Nathaniel Lowe scored on a wild pitch by Jeremiah Estrada.
Bradgley Rodriguez retired three straight batters following Brayan Rocchio’s leadoff double in the ninth for his first career save.
Rocchio and Lowe each hit a solo homer for Cleveland, which has lost five of its last six games and 16 of its last 21.
Lowe finished with three hits and opened the scoring with a leadoff blast in the second inning, marking his 14th homer of the season.
The Guardians extended their lead with two runs in the second. Rocchio hit his 10th homer of the season with one out, and Lowe delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to make it 3-0.
San Diego got on the board with two outs in the fourth inning against Gavin Williams (11-7) when Bogaerts turned on an 0-1 sweeper for a two-run homer.
The Padres sent nine batters to the plate and moved ahead with three runs in the fifth inning. Tatis sparked the rally with a leadoff homer to left field. With the bases loaded and one out, Campusano doubled to right field to bring home two runs and give San Diego the lead.
Williams gave up five runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out five.
Cleveland cut into the lead with a run in the sixth. Angel Genao hit a two-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error before scoring on Petey Halpin’s double.
The Padres responded with two runs in the seventh on Campusano’s run-scoring double and Bogaerts’ sacrifice fly. The Guardians got one run back in the eighth but couldn’t get any closer.
