Andre Pallante pitched 5 1/3 solid innings and rookie JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run double in the fifth inning for the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, who withstood rainy conditions and earned a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
After a 68-minute rain delay before the first pitch, the Cardinals won for the fourth time in their past five visits to Yankee Stadium and for the seventh time in their past 20 games overall.
Pallante (12-6) permitted a run on three hits and completed five innings for the 21st time in 22 starts this season. He improved to 7-2 in his past 11 starts. Riley O’Brien threw a hitless ninth inning for his 27th save.
The Cardinals had just three baserunners off New York’s Will Warren (8-6) during the first four innings before the decisive three-run fifth. Warren allowed three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Blue Jays 5, Astros 4 (10 innings)
Ernie Clement poked a two-run homer in the 10th inning, and visiting Toronto defeated Houston.
Clement cracked his ninth long ball of the year off Bennett Sousa (0-1) to lead off the 10th after Jesus Sanchez earlier belted a two-run homer. Jameson Taillon, in his first start for the Blue Jays, allowed six hits and three runs over four innings. Louis Varland (4-4) threw a perfect ninth, and Chase Lee picked up his first career save.
Jose Altuve opened the scoring with a third-inning solo homer for Houston, and LaMonte Wade went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Astros starter Hunter Brown gave up three runs and three hits over six innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Cubs 7, Dodgers 6
Pete Crow-Armstrong lashed two homers and a double to outduel Shohei Ohtani and help Chicago complete a three-game sweep of visiting Los Angeles.
Ohtani homered twice and singled in a showdown of the National League’s top Most Valuable Player candidates, but Crow-Armstrong and the Cubs seized the lead in the second inning and held on. Nico Hoerner had three hits, an RBI and a run for Chicago, which saw Shota Imanaga (8-9) allow one run and eight hits over five innings.
Dodgers starter Eric Lauer (6-6) gave up six runs on 11 hits over four innings. Max Muncy contributed a homer and Mookie Betts went 4-for-5 for Los Angeles, which has dropped six straight and eight of 10.
Nationals 10, Phillies 4 (11 innings)
CJ Abrams delivered a two-run triple to spark a six-run 11th inning for Washington in a road win over Philadelphia.
Abrams finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs for the Nationals, who had lost seven games in a row. Nasim Nunez and Andres Chaparro each drove in two runs, while Brady House delivered a pinch-hit home run for the visitors.
Luis Arraez belted his first homer as a member of the Phillies, who had won their previous four games. Philadelphia managed only five hits, four of them singles.
Diamondbacks 10, Padres 4
Rookie Mitch Bratt gave up one hit in seven scoreless innings for his first major league victory and Arizona spoiled Casey Mize’s San Diego debut, prevailing in Phoenix.
Bratt (1-1) struck out a career-high nine and walked three in his sixth and longest major league start. Ildemaro Vargas knocked in four runs and Tim Tawa homered and drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.
Mize (4-7), acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline on Monday, gave up season highs of nine hits and eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. homered in the ninth, and Gage Workman added a three-run double.
Brewers 4, Pirates 2
Kyle Harrison tossed five innings of one-hit ball in his return from the injured list, pacing Milwaukee to a victory over visiting Pittsburgh.
Harrison (9-2) struck out 10, including the last eight he faced, and walked one before leaving after 69 pitches with what the Brewers announced was cramping in both calves. William Contreras homered and Trevor Megill logged his 20th save for the Brewers, who have won two straight.
Pirates starter Paul Skenes (9-10) allowed three runs on two hits in five innings. Endy Rodriguez hit a two-run homer.
Royals 2, Twins 1
Noah Cameron allowed one run and struck out nine over eight strong innings, Michael Massey clubbed a tiebreaking homer in the seventh, and Kansas City beat Minnesota for its fifth straight home win.
Cameron (6-8) yielded two hits and a walk, yielding his lone run in the fourth inning. He retired the final 14 batters he faced, with the last five going down on strikes.
Massey had two of the Royals’ five hits and broke a 1-1 tie when he opened the seventh inning by sending a pitch from A.J. Minter (1-2) over the right field wall. Dean Kremer, acquired from Baltimore prior to the Monday trade deadline, allowed three hits and two walks but only one run over five innings in his Twins debut.
Rangers 6, Giants 0
Justin Foscue highlighted a four-run third inning with a two-RBI triple and Cody Bradford combined with four relievers on an eight-hitter as Texas blanked San Francisco in Arlington, Texas.
Brandon Nimmo had two hits, including a home run, two RBIs and scored twice for the Rangers. Nicky Lopez finished with two hits and drove in a run. Tyler Alexander (2-2) relieved Bradford with one out in the fifth and retired all five batters he faced.
Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt was charged with four runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings. Rafael Devers and Drew Cavanaugh had a pair of hits apiece for San Francisco.
Orioles 5, Angels 2
Tyler O’Neill and Coby Mayo hit back-to-back home runs, Leody Taveras belted a pinch-hit homer and Trevor Rogers put together a strong start as Baltimore beat visiting Los Angeles.
Rogers (7-7) struck out a season-high nine without walking a hitter and limited the Angels to two runs and three hits over six-plus innings. Mayo had two of Baltimore’s six hits, spurring the Orioles onto their fourth win in six games.
Jose Siri homered for the Angels, who have lost seven of their past eight games. Starter Reid Detmers (3-8) lasted four innings, giving up three runs on four hits.
Red Sox 4, White Sox 0
Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-3 with three runs and his 20th home run of the season as Boston blanked visiting Chicago 4-0.
Sonny Gray (14-2) fired six scoreless innings as the Red Sox won their seventh consecutive game. The right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Tyron Guerrero, Garrett Whitlock and Jovani Moran threw one inning apiece to complete the four-hit shutout.
The White Sox’s Miguel Vargas finished 2-for-3. Massachusetts native Sean Burke (7-6) allowed two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings as Chicago took its third defeat in four games.
Braves 4, Marlins 1
Bryce Elder allowed only one hit over seven innings to help Atlanta extend its winning streak to a season-high seven games with a win over visiting Miami.
Elder (8-6), making his 100th career start, made it through at least seven innings for the fourth time this season. He allowed one run on the one hit and two walks while striking out three on an economical 84 pitches.
The Marlins had the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning, but Didier Fuentes retired Otto Lopez on a one-pitch groundout then pitched the ninth for his second save. Drake Baldwin had two hits and two RBIs for the Braves.
Reds 3, Athletics 2
Rhett Lowder allowed just two runs in six innings and Matt McLain homered, leading host Cincinnati to a second straight win over the Athletics.
Lowder (4-7) snapped a personal six-decision losing streak and earned a win for the first time since April 20 at Tampa Bay — a span of 11 starts and three relief appearances. He yielded four hits and two walks while striking out three.
Athletics starter Jacob Lopez allowed just two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out nine and walking one. The A’s lost their seventh straight game and dropped their 13th consecutive series.
Mets 6, Guardians 5 (10 innings)
Bo Bichette singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning after New York tied the score with two outs in the ninth, giving the visiting Mets a win over Cleveland.
The Guardians appeared to have the game won in the ninth until shortstop Brayan Rocchio fumbled a two-out grounder from A.J. Ewing, allowing Jared Young to score. New York had loaded the bases against All-Star closer Cade Smith. Matt Festa (2-3) gave up the decisive run in the 10th inning.
Mets reliever Chayce McDermott (1-0) worked two scoreless innings for his first major league win. Daniel Duarte threw a hitless 10th inning for his first save of the year.
Mariners 4, Tigers 2
Julio Rodriguez hit a three-run homer and Bryan Woo pitched seven scoreless innings as Seattle defeated visiting Detroit.
The benches cleared with two outs in the top of the eighth inning but no punches were thrown after the Tigers’ Gleyber Torres was hit by a pitch from reliever Gabe Speier. That came after Seattle’s Cal Raleigh was nailed in the stomach in the bottom of the previous inning. Speier was ejected, as was Mariners manager Dan Wilson for arguing the decision.
Detroit’s Dillon Dingler was the next batter up after Torres and greeted Eduard Bazardo with a two-run homer to straightaway center, trimming the Mariners’ lead to 3-2. Woo (8-8) improved to 7-0 at home this season.
Rays 4, Rockies 0
Junior Caminero homered, Victor Mesa Jr. had two triples, and Tampa Bay beat Colorado in Denver.
Nick Martinez (11-3) had another strong outing for the Rays, scattering six hits in 5 2/3 innings to tie his career high in victories. Tampa Bay swept a series for the 11th time this season, which is fourth most in franchise history and three behind the record set in 2021.
Kyle Karros had two hits for the Rockies, who finished their homestand 3-3 ahead of their longest road trip of the season (nine games).
