Fowler put the Blues up 1-0 at the 2:16 mark with a slap shot off the left wing.
Shortly thereafter, Binnington stopped Arseny Gritsyuk from the near slot after Blues defender Logan Mailloux turned the puck over in front of his net. Jesper Bratt rushed up the right wing and fired a shot off the left post less than 90 seconds later.
New Jersey finally broke through when Dougie Hamilton shot the puck from the right point and Meier converted the carom to tie the game 1-1.
St. Louis regained the lead on a power play. Thomas took Fowler’s pass, slid toward the slot and snapped a shot past Markstrom’s short side.
Binnington kept the score at 2-1 by thwarting Meier’s drive to the net late in the period.
After Markstrom denied Oskar Sundqvist on a partial breakaway early in the second period, Hischier tied the game 2-2 on a power play at the 8:49 mark.
Meier shot from the right circle and Hischier slid the rebound through Binnington’s pads.
The Devils killed off a four-minute Blues power play, then Markstrom stopped Mathieu Joseph to force the game into overtime. Hischier made a cross-crease pass to Nemec for the game-winner.
